Be the kind to be kind
Over the past decade, the world (more specifically the United States) has become a much crueler place. I’ve teetered on thinking whether the situation involves less inhibition, or whether cruelty is growing among the population. I’m now fairly confident that both are correct.
First, as leaders and people of importance made it more acceptable to speak illy, others gradually followed suit. While grumblings occurred, the repercussions were minor. Thus, the rhetoric, and “-isms” persisted, and increased.
Secondly, the number of individuals has grown increasingly cruel. We’ve seen this problem plague society long enough at this point, a new generation is adopting this mentality. The children of parents who adopted, and accepted the use of hateful language modeled its acceptance to the developing minds of their children. Those children are now pushing these narratives deeper, and darker into the culture.
Is this really the society you desire? I have some thoughts on ways to change, but I really hope to hear some thoughts from others before I share additional thoughts on the subject. For now, I just want to say, “be kind, and model kindness for your children.” A kind society is not a weak society. We can do better.
